Masterclass: Jennifer Holness

Jennifer Holness is a quadruple threat: she is a multi-award-winning producer, writer, showrunner and director. Whether the story is told as documentary (Stateless, as producer) or fiction (Guns, as co-writer, producer), Jennifer’s two-decade-long body of work has never shied away from thought-provoking stories and celebrating Black excellence. She is the only Black woman to win a Gemini for writing, and the first and only Black producer to win TIFF’s Best Canadian First Feature Film award. Jennifer sits down in conversation with arts critic and curator Sarah-Tai Black to talk about her career and 2021 Hot Docs official selection Subjects of Desire, which marks her first return to directing in over a decade.
