PRFLEX: Improve the Recycling Rate of Flexible Plastic Packaging
Information
Flexible plastic packaging represents a significant portion of plastic packaging used in Canada, but its recovery rates remain low. In the context of the evolution of extended producer responsibility (EPR) across the country, a consortium made up of the Canadian Plastics Pact (CPP), the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC), Circular Materials, the Circular Plastic Taskforce (CPT), Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ) and the Recycling Partnership have set themselves the ultimate objective of increasing the recycled content of packaging by improving sorting and recycling capacities throughout the country. The work, which runs until June 2023, will allow: - Determine the percentage of flexible plastic packaging currently collected and recycled, by format and type, in each province. - Identify MRFs sorting scenarios for accepting all flexible plastics in curbside collection. - Identify the investments required at targeted recyclers to produce post-consumer recycled resin in new packaging. The proposed presentation will review the results obtained and detail the next steps that could affect the flexible plastic packaging production industry.
