What skills are needed for the energy transition?
Information
The International Energy Agency estimates that in 2019, the energy sector represented around 2% of global employment, and that 50% of those were working in clean energies. The sector requires a variety of skills.
At the early stage of the supply chain, researchers are continuously looking for ways to improve core technologies. Factories require all types of business development profiles – from raising funds to finding clients. The manufacturing process needs engineers to design the most efficient factories, which need to be run by well-trained logisticians and employees. Then, the various products must be transported, demanding a whole shipment workforce. Later, the installation process calls for electricians and installers; they represent the largest share of workers. In addition, the solar power plant requires an operation and maintenance team.
Transitioning towards a cleaner energy system necessitates an incredibly broad range of available skills. A variety of panelists are invited to this session: national government representatives, private solar companies, job agencies as well as research institutes. The panel discussion will be preceded by a brief presentation of the key highlights from SolarPower Europe’s latest Job Report.
