How can the cider industry adapt to climate change?

Information
Climate change is having an increasingly significant impact on agricultural production. Its first effects are visible in the production of cider apples, with an increasing number of extreme events (late frosts, water shortages in summer and early autumn, heatwaves), with consequences for the orchard (harvest date, potential decline, etc.) and the fruit (ripeness, quality, etc.).
Faced with this major challenge, the cider orchards must adapt. The aim of these cider talks is to provide an overview of the avenues and possibilities that can help meet this challenge. After looking at changes in the future climate, we will present solutions that have already been implemented in other sectors, including actions underway at the IFPC.
The first presentation, "Climate change - Projections for production areas", aims to shed light on the impact of climate change on orchards, in order to better anticipate future risks and identify the adaptation strategies to be implemented.
The choice of plant material is part of the resilience strategies that can be implemented by the cider industry. This is obviously a long-term one action. The second presentation highlights the CLIMCIDRE project, the aim of which is to provide the IFPC with tools for measuring the resilience of varieties to periods of water stress.
The third presentation will be dedicatied to experience of the wine industry. It will focus on the various solutions that are being considered or already implemented to enable winegrowing to adapt to climate change.
In addition to the possible systemic solutions to be implemented (choice of variety/rootstock, crop management), a final presentation based on the experience of the Ente plums (Agen prune) industry on irrigation, will provide an update on access to water, irrigation methods and the management possibilities for a reasoned contribution.
