Snow Crab
Crab-Snow
Information
Polar Seafood’s snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) is caught in West Greenland and in the Norwegian part of the Barents Sea. In Greenland, the snow crab is caught by fishermen in traditional small fishing boats, who land their catch at Polar Seafood’s factories. In Norway, the catch, processing, and freezing all take place at sea, on board vessels operating in the Barents Sea.
Modified traps
Snow crab is caught using crab traps designed to minimize impact on the surrounding environment, especially the seabed. These traps are also modified to ensure that crabs can escape in case the traps are lost at sea. By using modified traps, we aim to protect marine ecosystems and ensure that our snow crab fishery remains viable for future generations.
Delicious, sweet flavour
Snow crab is characterized by its succulent, fine white meat with a firm texture. The meat has a delicate and naturally sweet flavour, making it extremely popular in both hot and cold dishes. It has gained popularity due to its low fat and calorie content, combined with a high protein level. We freeze our snow crab sections in brine and grade them into various sizes. The most common snow crab size in both Greenland and Norway is 5–8 oz, although sizes of 14 oz and above are occasionally seen in Norway.
