Concurrent Symposium Description:

Recent advancements in X-ray imaging at synchrotron light sources, offering ultrabright, tunable, coherent monochromatic beams, have revolutionized plant science by providing unprecedented insights into plants structure and function, and their interactions with the environment. This session will explore cutting-edge imaging and elemental speciation techniques, such as X-ray fluorescence microscopy, X-ray computed tomography, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray ptychography, which enable detailed visualization and analysis of plant morphology, elemental distributions, and physiological processes. Multimodal, nondestructive measurements enable detailed 2D and 3D visualization of biological samples at micro and nano scales, facilitating a deeper understanding of how plants adapt and respond to environmental factors. Key applications include the study of nutrient uptake and distribution, metal hyperaccumulation, the role of the rhizosphere, and the structural dynamics of plant cells and tissues. Advanced imaging methods uncover vital information about plant resilience and efficiency, paving the way for breakthroughs in sustainable crop production, food science, and resource management.

Equity and Inclusion: The proposed session, "From Roots to Canopy: Advanced X-ray Imaging in Plant Biology," embraces diversity by bringing together domain experts from a diverse range of backgrounds and expertise, including plant biologists, environmental scientists, and synchrotron scientists from academia and facilities across different geographic locations. This diverse group of speakers will offer a spectrum of viewpoints and expertise on how modern x-ray tools and user facilities can be utilized to advance our knowledge of plant biology, providing attendees with varied and comprehensive perspectives. Historically, x-ray methods have been underutilized in life sciences, thus this session aims to present opportunities that these tools can offer the community. The session ensures equity by providing equal opportunities for participation and presentation, as well as fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where all attendees can ask questions and engage in conversation with the speakers. Overall, this session proposal provides an inclusive and equitable opportunity for attendees to learn from a diverse group of experts and participate in advancing the field of plant biology through cutting-edge x-ray techniques and analysis.
