Cryo-EM PSI structures reveal adaptation mechanisms to extreme high light in Chlorella ohadii

Cell Biology
Information
Cryo-EM structures of PSI from cells grown under low (PSI LL )/high light (PSI HL ) were
obtained at 2.70Å and 2.71Å, respectively. Changes observed: PsaO is eliminated
from PSI HL ; In LHCI HL ~50% of chlorophyll b is replaced by chlorophyll a leading to
higher electron transfer (ET) rates in PSI HL . PSI HL /PSI LL were attached to an electrode
for their induced photocurrent measurements. 25-times the amount of PSI LL was
required to obtain photocurrents comparable to PSI HL ; thereby PSI HL his high efficient.
