FEMA CCP

Information

The New Mexico Behavioral Health Services Division (BHSD) provides mental health and behavioral health services to individuals who have been impacted by COVID. The program is funded by the Federal Emergency Management System (FEMA).

BHSD contracts with FEMA-trained professionals to provide these free and confidential COVID crisis services aimed at helping to allay the individual’s fears and concerns due to COVID. It's about checking in with individuals during these challenging times. Much like a neighbor or friend or family member who checks in with each other.

BHSD Director Neal A. Bowen, PhD said, “There are many reasons many feel extreme anxiety and distress, including job loss, food, and housing insecurity and health concerns, daily separation, shelter and care center outbreak risks, re-entry from incarceration. Our goals are to relieve the stress, reinforce coping skills, reduce future behavioral health issues and promote individual and community resilience. We want everybody to know how common the struggles are and that everyone can benefit from talking to someone about their experience.”

Free and confidential short-term services include: Individual crisis counseling, group crisis counseling, brief educational and/or supportive contact, referral and resource linkage(s), and community networking and support.  These primary services are provided through telehealth services, e.g., iPads and/or laptops and/or cell phones.
