Nursing Times Workforce Summit & Awards 2025The nursing workforce conundrum continues, with its many complex factors, but with the same overarching question: how does the health and social care system ensure it has sufficient staff.The domestic pipeline of nurses coming via university and other routes is still struggling, with higher education institutions facing their own financial challenges while trying to fill and retain courses. Fields like mental health and learning disabilities have been especially badly hit.  Possibly even worse, while there is a shortage of nursing staff in most sectors and settings, perplexingly the newly registered nurses who have graduated are finding it increasingly hard to secure their first jobs due to NHS budget restraints.Meanwhile, there is government pressure to reduce spending on agency nursing staff and reliance on overseas recruitment, as there so often is when it comes to politics, both of which are easier said than done when providers need to fill posts and maintain safety.  Plus, along with these situations and more in play, winter is coming and so too we understand is a new 10 Year Workforce Plan for the health service in England, with a call for evidence having been launched back in September. This new document will replace the 2023 NHS Long Term Workforce Plan NHS England, dubbed as the first comprehensive workforce plan for the NHS, but which never really got going before the change of government last year. Furthermore, a first workforce strategy for social care was unveiled earlier this year by Skills for Care and a new nursing strategy for Wales is due to be launched this month, with workforce policies and strategies in place or in development across other parts of the UK.As well as the promise of new plans to help health and social care leaders find their way through some of these challenges, pioneering organisations and talented managers are already coming up with their own innovations and ideas to solve or ease workforce problems at a local level.All this and more will be discussed, presented and debated at a range of Nursing Times workforce events this month, starting with a virtual half-day conference on 19 November, which is free to attend, and followed by the annual Nursing Times Workforce Summit & Awards on 26 November. The Nursing Times Workforce Summit will attract over 250 attendees from a broad range of fields, sectors, settings and specialties to discuss key aspects of health and social care workforce policy, from education and training to retention and transforming nursing practice and workplace culture.First held in 2018, the Nursing Times Workforce Awards are our annual celebration of the nurses, midwives and employers making a real difference in key areas such as staff recruitment, retention, wellbeing and inclusion. At the ceremony, we will reveal the winners of 18 categories, including standout awards for Nurse Manager of the Year, Workforce Team of the Year and Best UK Employer of the Year for Nursing Staff.
