Artist Statement/Bio
My vibrant BiblioQuilt series was created using old, discarded books that were salvaged from basements, barns, attics and public libraries. They’re not made of cloth. I repurpose every part of those books —the covers, the pages, the spines—breathing new life into my materials with the addition of dyes, inks, and acrylics. My ultimate goal is to work with underserved public libraries/schools throughout New England – producing customized work (at no cost to them) that can be used to brighten up their public spaces, and generate funds for new books/supplies (via print/poster sales). After earning a B.A. in Art from Northwestern University and an M.A. in Biomedical Communications from the University of Texas, I spent 15 years producing award-winning biomedical illustrations, with an emphasis on traditional media like pen-and-ink, carbon dust, and watercolor. Eventually, I switched to strategic planning, marketing, and business development for the healthcare sector. At this stage of my career, I am thrilled to be getting back to my roots as a maker of fine art. My mixed media work is a celebration of books, booklovers, libraries, and bookstores. The online gallery that I launched (www.flyleafgallery.com) features original works, limited-edition (giclee) prints, and posters. All pieces are suitable for fundraisers, commemorative events, and public spaces. I’m also available for commissioned work.
