We Don't Talk About TikTok
Information
THIS SESSION WILL BE PRESENTED IN A VIRTUAL FORMAT TO IN-PERSON ATTENDEES.
This session will discuss TikTok as a vehicle to introduce students to the idea of scholarship. As academic librarians, we notice students struggling to grasp the concept of scholarly conversation, and TikTok offers an introduction to this topic that is familiar and accessible. This app is used to consume, create, and collaborate; by doing so, users are participating in a digital conversation, unaware that this is a model for academic scholarship. We will discuss issues of crediting creators, algorithm biases, and how it all relates to scholarly discourse. This presentation has a broad enough discussion of TikTok to appeal to librarians and information professionals beyond a college or university setting. Participants will learn practical applications of TikTok in an instructional setting, see how TikTok fits into ACRL frames and ISTE standards, and gain a more holistic view of the app itself.
