Breakout Session

Information

Across schools today, leaders are navigating rising student needs, instructional change, workforce challenges, and increasing community expectations. Yet the physical learning environment is often treated as a facilities issue or capital expense rather than a strategic support for teaching and learning.

This session reframes the learning environment as a leadership lever. Drawing on interdisciplinary research from education, neuroscience, and environmental psychology, participants will explore how physical conditions influence attention, engagement, regulation, wellbeing, and instructional effectiveness. The presentation will connect evidence to practice through a real district case study shared from a superintendent's perspective, illustrating how space decisions can support system coherence, educator effectiveness, and student outcomes.

Participants will leave with practical, research-informed strategies to better align learning environments with current instructional practices and future-ready learning, and to more intentionally use space as a tool to support people, practice, and performance across a school system.
