Intro : Design, Train, Fight and Fix : how VR/AR is now connected to the entire Life Cycle of the Defence sector

VR and AR have made themselves highly valuable at all stages in the Defence sector : supporting the optimal design of expensive stealth-flight planes ; making pre-mission training (one of the largest cost drivers in defence) more effective ; providing a situational awareness advantage during a mission ; and finally helping on an easier technical maintenance or human recovery. Those cases will be further articulated through 4 operational projects demonstrating how AR/VR is going to become the ultimate tool for the new military generation. About the session : Technologies give many opportunities in security and defense domain, and amplify the long struggle between the spear and the shield. But how immersive technologies are used today? Are they making big differences to train soldiers, to help rescuers, to save lifes? Discover pioneer XR experiences in defense and security fields over this session.

Intro

For a long time now, many people were living in a "digital world" and have forgotten all hidden layers that supports all of this. Massive storages, powerful computers and telecom equipments, 4G and (soon) 5G networks, mysterious clouds, any material part that are going to revolutionize our immersive practices. But, don't forget that evolution of legal, data privacy, security management or social behaviour could also change the game. Come in this session to clarify our minds!

Lecture : The promises and pitfalls of the coming digital upgrade of our physical reality

The Internet is moving off screens and out into the world around us. Our physical reality is about to get a digital upgrade and it could potentially enhance every aspect of our digital lives, culture, and economy. It might even help bring us in better touch with each other and the places where we live. At the heart of this transformation will be a shared, interactive, smart and adaptive universe attached permanently to the real world. We will be able to summon content and apps for any purpose, need or desire. This can be achieved by matching 1:1 scale digital twins of real places with what our devices can sense. We will get our first experiences of this upgraded reality through Augmented Reality enabled devices such as smartphones or AR-glasses. This talk will elaborate on some of the promises of this technology. The talk will then delve into some of the perils posed by the merger of the real and the digital world. To reach its full potential, AR Cloud applications, content and experiences must be accessible, and work seamlessly for anyone, anywhere, on any device, and without unjustified restrictions. Currently, there is no such interoperability. There is no equivalent of the open web for real-world spatial computing. We risk getting stuck in siloed experiences for a long time. In a longer time perspective, the biggest perils of this new technology are likely the potential threats to individual rights to privacy, freedom, personal safety, and dignity. If we fail to protect these fundamental pillars of liberal democracies the speaker fears that we could build for ourselves a digital prison controlled by governments or big corporations. The speaker will then address the challenge of how to best realize the promises while avoiding the perils. He will give a status update on the global community of professionals who are currently tackling these challenges head-on through their participation in the work of Open AR Cloud.

Use case : HoloGRAM - Holo & Graphical Radar cross-section Measure

HoloGRAM is a mixed reality application for visualizing the level of stealth, called Radar Cross-Section (RCS), directly on a military aircraft. This solution makes it possible to overlay the RCS, recorded in the form of a virtual 3D hologram, on the real military aircraft that was the subject of the simulation (or the measurement).

Applied research attempts to take advantage of immersion and body relations with avatars. The care offers use the commitment and adaptability of the human being, with his great neuroplasticity, based on new dynamic behaviours. Current collaborations between life sciences and digital sciences are being set up, with very significant investments (Mindmaze, Hypno VR), based on multi-sensory integration capabilities, bio-feedback, and some bodily illusions, even on modified states of consciousness.

We will discusses the architecture design of virtual environment for Autism spectrum disorder, this design aims to save time and costs to provide a real environment for autistic children. Our methodology consists of building environment using Unity 3D under the supervision of a specialist, this way will allow us to mentor the user’s interaction with the VR system as well as the interaction with the parents of the user under the same framework.   This system demonstrates the concept of implementing VR into the educational system for individuals with ASD based on ABA therapy . That is , can lead to the integration of a new educational tool that can be used in favour of schooling ASD children.

Opening Keynote by Microsoft : Mixed Reality with HoloLens 2: A New Vision for Computing

Our industry, and indeed the world, is at an incredibly exciting technology inflection point. The virtually limitless computing power of the cloud combined with increasingly intelligent and perceptive devices at the edge of the network create possibilities we could only have dreamed of just a few years ago. When the intelligent cloud and intelligent edge are imbued with mixed reality and artificial intelligence, we have a framework for achieving amazing things and empowering even more people. Enabling intelligent cloud and intelligent edge solutions requires a new class of distributed, connected applications that will deliver break-through business outcomes. Now all the pieces are coming together. 2019 represents an important milestone for Microsoft. From cutting-edge hardware design to mixed reality-infused cloud services, latest announcements represent the collective work of many teams. And none of this would be possible without our passionate community of customers, partners and developers. It is my privilege to introduce you to HoloLens 2 and all the announcements we made during MWC Barcelona.

Lecture : The Principles of Experiential Design

Immersive Storytelling blends together the storytelling languages of film, immersive theater, and gaming, and this presentation will provide an experiential design framework that looks at the building blocks of the human experience in terms of the quality of an experience, the context of an experience, the character of an experience, and the story of an experience. Presenter Kent Bye has conducted over 1000 interviews with the pioneers of VR and AR over the past year on the Voices of VR podcast, and he'll be sharing some of his key insights into the unique affordances of the virtual and augmented reality mediums.
