Earth-2: A digital twin of the Earth powered by artificial intelligence

Revolutionary developments in Artificial Intelligence have enabled data scientists to develop powerful scientific tools that greatly surpass the capabilities of traditional hand-written software. NVIDIA is leveraging AI and GPU-accelerated computing to construct Earth-2, a digital twin that reflects the current and future state of our planet, empowering users to predict and respond to the hardships posed by climate change over the coming decades. Our AI powered medium range weather-forecast model FourCastNet exhibits skill on par with the top global NWP models, such as the Integrated Forecast System (IFS) model from the European Center for Medium Range Weather Prediction (ECMWF), but with nearly instantaneous results, using a tiny fraction of the computer hardware and power. Building on this achievement, we are developing a platform to support AI models for global climate prediction, generative AI downscaling, and seasonal-to-subseasonal forecasting. Earth-2 will soon be accessible to external users providing stakeholders worldwide with the opportunity to benefit from its accurate predictions.
