ENGIE and ArianeGroup team up to develop renewable liquid hydrogen

Case Studies

Information

ENGIE and ArianeGroup have announced the signing of a cooperation agreement in the field of renewable liquid hydrogen to speed up the decarbonisation of heavy-duty and long-distance transportation. Renewable liquid hydrogen is a zero-emissions alternative to fossil fuels and an answer to the specific storage and endurance requirements of sectors such as maritime and rail transport and aviation. ENGIE and ArianeGroup will therefore leverage their expertise and cutting-edge technologies in hydrogen to: - develop and test optimised liquefaction technology with the development of a hydrogen liquefier at ArianeGroup's industrial facility in Vernon (France); - then develop a range of products and services on the liquid hydrogen line, primarily for maritime and inland waterway applications. For more than forty years, ArianeGroup has been developing expertise in liquid hydrogen-based propulsion systems and related ground facilities. It employs over a thousand staff in France and Germany who work daily on hydrogen technologies. ArianeGroup also operates Europe's largest hydrogen test centre at its facility in Vernon, France.
ENGIEENGIE Accelerating the Decarbonization of  the Mining Industry ENGIE relies on a broad portfolio of expertise to provide the mining industry with a complete range of services, combining technical, economic and environmental performance. We associate know-how in many technical engineering areas to support greenfield and brownfield projects, to provide green, competitive energy supply and improved performance of the mining operations. In line with the low-carbon economy and social responsibility targets, ENGIE also proposes additional solutions to decarbonize mining activities and facilitate a sustainable integration of mining projects in local communities and environment. ENGIE also supports industrial actors in their integration of new technologies or their investment in digital transformation by proposing innovative solutions. ENGIE invites you to be part of our open innovation approach. ENGIE Develops Renewable  Hydrogen Renowned as one of the world’s foremost energy operators and a world leader in the energy transition, ENGIE has the ambition of being a major player in hydrogen. At ENGIE, we firmly believe that hydrogen is the key that will unlock the full potential of renewables and carbon-neutral energy solutions. It will accelerate the energy transition by allowing various green energy technologies to be used with much greater flexibility. We are committed to developing solutions based on renewable hydrogen, produced by electrolysis using a green energy supply. Hydrogen is the missing link for a decarbonized ecosystem, allowing for the harmonious progress of cities, territories and societies around the globe. ENGIE aims at operating across the entire value chain of renewable hydrogen, from carbon-neutral power generation to the three key end uses:  mobility, industry and energy storage. ENGIE will architect and deliver reliable and sustainable green solutions to address its clients’ requirements for more environmentally responsible energy uses. Specifically, for the Mining sector, green hydrogen can be used as a fuel for the heavy-duty mobility applications, such as mining trucks, locomotives and ore carriers. It can also be used to produce heat and to act as a reduction agent, within mineral processing, such as the production of Aluminium and Steel among others. Furthermore, it can be used as a feedstock for the production of chemicals used in the mine such as ammonia, hydrogen peroxide for example. And last but not least, by having an integrated hydrogen infrastructure within the mining ecosystem, it will also provide storage and flexibility to its electrical system, enabling its 24x7 decarbonization, while ensuring a reliable power supply.
