RPM Perspective - DEMYSTIFYING ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL PERFORMANCE
Insights and Case Studies
Information
Recent decades have seen the emergence of a confusing array of standards, principals and guidance for the resources industry aimed at spurring changes in
environmental and social management (E&S). In the past, many mining companies struggled to understand what was needed to meet this growing body of international standards and especially how to meet the expectations of lenders,
governments and host communities.
This paper attempts to demystify international E&S performance standards by placing them where they rightfully belong – squarely within the company’s suite of policies, procedures and practices. E&S performance should not be viewed as an externally driven set of requirements, but rather should be embraced as indispensable management tools that gain government and community support, rationalise risk, and make projects more viable.
