Breakfast Roundtable: Transitioning to Zero-Carbon Mining - Bridging the Technology Gap

Breakfast Roundtable: Transitioning to Zero-Carbon Mining - Bridging the Technology Gap

Day 2 - Breakfast Roundtable

Information

New technologies and innovations will be needed to support mining’s transition to zero-carbon. This breakfast panel will provide insight on what’s needed to mobilize these decarbonization technologies which will enable miners to reach carbon emissions targets.

  • What are the biggest technology gaps in developing the roadmap to zero-emissions mines?
  • What are some of the innovative technologies miners are assessing to reach decarbonization goals?
  • What are the main challenges in trying to determine the viability of pre-commercialized technologies?
  • What are some potential solutions for accelerating innovation in mine decarbonization technologies and solutions?
  • What is the potential role for intellectual property in supporting the mobilization of decarbonization technologies for mines?
  • Which types of solutions do mining innovation experts see as crucial for zero-emissions mining?
  • What would assist mining companies and technology suppliers to take the next steps in deploying early-stage technologies?
MICAThe Mining Innovation Commercialization Accelerator (MICA) Network was created on July 9, 2021 through an investment of $40 million from the Government of Canada’s Strategic Innovation Fund. MICA is a $112.4 million pan-Canadian initiative bringing together stakeholders from a wide range of fields to accelerate the development and commercialization of innovative technologies to make the mining sector more productive and sustainable. CEM CEMI’s objective is to help the mining sector achieve step-change improvement in performance by accelerating the adoption of innovations in mines and by increasing the innovation capacity of the mining service companies that deliver techniques and technologies to the industry. There is no shortage of good ideas, or partially developed solutions to the very real problems that confront mining operations, but the process of converting these into commercially viable products and services that mining companies can adopt, is slow and difficult. The need for mines to achieve step-change improvement in operational performance is urgent and we are finding ways to make this happen more quickly and efficiently. We focus on: - Accelerating the commercialization of technical solutions to be market ready — Viable Products & Services - Managing networks of technical solution providers and innovative SMEs — Sector Collaboration - Systematically target issues relevant to the global mining industry as well as regional and national ones — SME Export Market - Searching globally for solutions to locally critical operational bottleneck — Industry-Identified Priorities
