Information
Vivo Energy Kenya, the company that markets and distributes Shell-branded fuels and lubricants in the country, has today received over 300,000 litres of fuel at its Nanyuki fuel storage depot, delivered by Kenya Railways Corporation cargo train.
The fuel, delivered in seven wagons, was transported approximately 755 kilometres from Mombasa to Nanyuki, after being loaded at Vivo Energy Kenya’s Mombasa terminal in Shimanzi.
Transportation of petroleum by rail has numerous benefits. Firstly, safety, by avoiding transportation of fuel from the busy Nairobi-Nanyuki road to the railway line. Preservation of the national road network is another highlight; having less heavy cargo on our roads keeps the roads better maintained for more extended periods, saving the National and County governments money on constant repairs. The third highlight is security of fuel supply for the Mount Kenya region and the neighbouring counties, since the train will be able to carry more wagons per trip than road transport. Rail transport is also a more environmentally friendly means of transportation, with fewer emissions.
