Japan Cosmetic Center (JCC) is actively involved in the support of new development of local natural ingredients to be used in cosmetics. Camellia Japonica (“Tsubaki” in Japanese) oil is a precious ingredient that has been used for centuries in Japan as a natural treasured beauty item. Around 30 hectares (over 45,000) of Camellia Japonica trees are growing wild in Kakarashima, a small island in the southern part of Japan, however this island is struggling with its aging population and other issues caused by the cohabitation with wild animals. JCC, together with the local community of the island, managed to optimize the harvest of Tsubaki seeds and to develop a marketing model for its cosmetic ingredient transformation. This not only turned out to be the key to a new sustainable source of life for the island, but is having a very positive effect on the community as a whole. The surprising high quality of the pure and organic oil extracted from those camellia japonica seeds, has made it an attractive ingredient chosen now by many popular Japanese organic cosmetic brands.
