Half of Africa’s population lacks access to electricity. This has vast implications on people’s health and safety, education, social inequality and economic growth. Displaced people are particularly vulnerable and solar power can be part of the solution. A yearly investment of $ 50-60 million could ensure the transition of about 90 percent of camp operations from diesel generators to solar technologies by 2030.
NORCAP in collaboration with Boston Consulting Group recently launched the report “Empowering Africa’s Most Vulnerable – access to solar energy in complex crises”. The report shows what actions and stakeholders are needed to accelerate the use of clean energy among displaced and host communities. Furthermore, the study evaluates the opportunity for the Humanitarian-Development-Peace nexus (“Triple Nexus”) approach to address the issue and identifies how the pooled effort, capabilities, and finances could enable this energy access.
