With Phenomena, Ismaël Mouaraki is questioning the human evolution. Indeed, the possibilities for amplification and transcendence seem endless today in a digital work of augmented realities and artificial intelligence. The dancer’s bodies become hybrid, in a tense space connected by an ever faster and more powerful flow of data, which suggest an upheaval within the body. With his latest creation, Ismaël Mouaraki isn’t offering ready-made responses. He doesn’t claim he knows what the future is holding exactly, but he questions our evolution, both from a sociological and scientific point of view. If technology continues in the direction of recent years, will it eventually integrate fully the body and become imperceptible? In this quest of transhumanism immortality and increase in human physical, psychic and intellectual capacity through science and technology, are we pushing the limits of humanity, transcending our biological limits? Hoping to cheat death? The ultimate challenge for Ismaël Mouaraki, in this piece, is that technology is only presented in the movement and the bodies of those five dancers, with a scenography striped of all artifice.
