Information
“I do not have the words to do justice to this piece of theatre. It will have to suffice to say it is one of the most extraordinary theatrical experiences I have ever encountered!” Charles Kruger, San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle (SFBATCC)
L’Orphelin (The Orphan) is a physical interpretation of the famous legend of The Orphan of Zhao, which is often known as the Chinese version of Hamlet. What makes this occurrence in history worthy of reflection lies in the fact that numerous accounts on the same historical event were exceptionally well-documented in notable literary works. The only question remains here: Among all the versions that retell the same tale, which one is the closest to the truth of what actually happened to the orphan of Zhao?
L’Orphelin serves as a great message in this era of time, as it is a dialogue on truth and freedom, on the relevance of history in the present time, or even about Hong Kong. L’Orphelin has no extravagant costumes nor elaborate backdrops, but only actors of various backgrounds coming together to retell the violent story of bloodshed, with their own sweat and tears, through the art of the body.
L’Orphelin first premiered in 2014. Until now, the production has accumulated 30 overseas tours. Our most significant performances include San Francisco International Arts Festival and Wuzhen Theatre Festival.
