When it was founded in 1982 by Jacques Beauchesne, Semican's development was based on the production and packaging of grain seeds. With steady growth in sales, it quickly became clear that to guarantee the future of the company, we had to differentiate ourselves from the markets and other grain seed suppliers in Quebec.
The process then began by establishing and developing good business relationships with researchers, breeders, partners and entrepreneurs from different government and private organizations.
This continuous work has made it possible to offer exclusive varieties of cereals with superior characteristics and yields. This approach has also proven successful in forage plants, allowing us to develop our exclusive range of "Optimum" forage seeds . We also add our expertise with a full range of cover crop seeds, including Vitali-T and intercrop green manures as well as our organic seed varieties.
Obtaining the exclusive distribution of Lallemand-Biotal products greatly contributed to the growth of the company through the arrival of silage inoculants with a proprietary strain of bacteria that will make it a high performance product.
Grain production and trade is also part of the equation. Grain contracts, crop marketing and niche markets are strengths here that provide farmers with attractive production alternatives on their land.
Semican continues its momentum, its growth and is well present in the landscape of Agriculture in Quebec, Ontario, the Maritimes as well as in the United States with a wide range of animal feed products, especially for horses, poultry and birds.
