The Snell House was designed by Franklin D. Israel (A Frank Gehry protégée) in the early 1970s and renovated by Jeni Erbes-Chan of Wythe Studios Architects in New York. Erbes-Chan preserved the architectural integrity of the space while giving it a more contemporary, functional feel. Something 'empty but very comfortable'. The Marmoreal surfaces in the kitchen and on the custom-designed dining table were specified at the insistence of the new owner and provide the interior with a few graphic moments within an otherwise spare interior. “The colours in real life are much more muted and subtle than what you see on the computer screen, and it worked really well with the red oak kitchen.” -Jeni Erbes-Chan of Wythe Studios Architects
dzekDzek creates original architectural products guided by nature. Our materials are developed in collaboration with designers, architects and material scientists with radical perspectives on resources and design systems that complement and challenge our own points of view. We work on a variety of scales, studying and reinterpreting traditional craft processes and industrial manufacturing to transform raw materials into useful products suitable for architecture and design. This transformation is led by experimentation and our desire to understand the behaviour of elements under conditional influence rather than working towards specific aesthetic outcomes. We believe that great architecture is made from elements that tell a story about their time and place. Through these stories we can peel back the layers to reveal the true value of things. Our approach to making respects the achievements of the past while aspiring to advance future possibilities. We aim to create products with artistic significance, and that allow architects and interior designers to forge meaningful new relationships between people and the spaces they occupy. We regularly support architects, designers, luxury brands and property developers to create project specific architectural materials and products. We’ve supported our clients through a range of activities that include concept, research, fabrication guidance and execution, and defining cohesive narrative structures that are brand consistent.
