Information

Originally founded in the 19th century, Portsmouth University provided training for personnel working in local navigation companies. Today, its various faculties welcome more than 20,000 students. Designed by ABK Architects, the library building was built in the 1970s, when the school was a polytechnic specialized high school attached to a high school founded about ten years ago. A historical context in perfect harmony with the USM Haller layout system, also created in the 60s! "By choosing USM Haller, we have helped to restore the building's original character," says interior designer Laure Debout, who was entrusted, under the guidance of architects Penoyre and Prasad, with the renovation of the ground floor. (2,000 m2) of the library. "This task was an opportunity to rethink the overall spatial concept of the library with USM Haller as storage furniture. USM's tubular metal frames blend seamlessly with the raw elements of concrete ceilings and exposed aeration wells." The shelves have been replaced by five groups of tables with computer stations, neighbouring with the USM furniture. The elements define the distribution of space and modify the overall vision of the library. The resulting spatial and living areas stand out for their ergonomic design. Another advantage is the improvement of acoustic conditions and spatial perception. The new furniture is lower than the old furniture and the light goes through their central opening. In addition, the chrome surfaces reflect the light, making it possible to make the most of daylight, especially during the winter months. The timeless character and the very solidity of the USM furniture give the layout of the library an authentic continuity. The modularity of this very varied furniture is a big investment made by the university which is a public institution. Reducing or expanding units is as simple as it is fast - whether in the library itself or anywhere else on campus.
USM Modular FurnitureChange is the only constant in life. The core of USM’s philosophy is that our work and home environments should be adaptable to whatever changes come our way. The USM modular system makes that idea a reality. Built from standardised components that make addition and reconfiguration easy, USM furniture is unmatched in its ability to be continuously remoulded to your changing environments and needs.  We build products that endure: wear-resistant materials, fine craftsmanship, durable designs, and timeless style all ensure that USM furniture lasts a lifetime.  It is the Swiss precision in which the components are made that give the furniture the strength, versatility and clean lines that have made USM Haller a design classic.  Since USM’s very beginning, sustainable development has been a keystone of our business. As a furniture business, that means two things. Firstly, we hold ourselves to the very highest standards when it comes to the materials and production methods we use and the energy and emissions they produce. Secondly, we do everything we can to provide our customers with furnishings that allow them to live in a sustainable manner.   That's why we are proud to have been awarded the Cradle to Cradle® certification for our USM Haller and USM Kitos M ranges.  As well as creating world-class products, we care about building lasting relationships with our customers, working with them to reconfigure their furnishings to meet their developing needs. No matter how big or small your order, our experts will work with you to make the most of the USM modular system to meet your particular requirements.
