Information

Data is arguably the ultimate source of information within modern day environments such as industry 4.0. Traditionally, routine inspections as part of a technical maintenance plan (TMP) have been conducted on a manual and time-interval basis, for example every 6 months or 10,000km, whichever comes first. Front-line and subject matter experts (SME) spend much of their time conducting engineering and maintenance work in accordance with TMPs, which have been formulated according to design failures (e.g. Failure Mode and Effects Analysis). However, with increased demands for safer and more reliable rail transport and limited maintenance capacity, the rail industry faces a monumental challenge with current maintenance practices to ensure quality of service and safety. As such, a distributed artificial intelligence (AI) approach is instrumental in modernising the TMP to ensure safe and reliable rail services.
