Information

The e-rater® engine is ETS's capability for the automated scoring of essays - the result of more than two decades of research supporting the development of construct-relevant and reliable scoring techniques. The engine has been in operational use since 1999 and is used to score millions of essays in a wide range of assessments and learning products.

The ETS e-rater® scoring and feedback engine automatically assesses writing quality and provides automated constructive feedback on grammar, usage, mechanics, style, and organization and development to help students develop their writing skills independently.  The compendium Criterion® Online Writing Evaluation Service automatically assess the quality of a user’s essay and provides users with rich, actionable feedback on their writing skills. This web-based, essay evaluation service is widely used as an instructional writing application in K-12 and higher education settings. Both capabilities will be discussed in detail as licensing options from ETS.
