Information

Evonik, a global leader for biomaterials with a broad portfolio of products, technologies, and services, has served as a development and solutions provider to many of the world’s largest and most innovative medical device companies for over 30 years. Our portfolio includes a range of bioresorbable polymers, surface modification technologies, nature-identical biomaterials including a non-animal derived recombinant collagen platform and bacterial nano-cellulose, and CDMO services for custom polymer synthesis, and the development of medical device parts to match specific application requirements.

RESOMER® is the world’s leading brand of bioresorbable polymers for use in implantable medical devices for more than 30 years. The versatility of RESOMER® polymers make them ideal for use in orthopedic, vascular, wound closure and other applications. Degradation profiles can span from weeks to more than four years. The portfolio includes a range of homo-polymers, copolymers and block co-polymers including lactide, glycolide, trimethylene carbonate, p-dioxanone, and ε-caprolactone and is supplied as granules, compounded pellets, composite blends, 3D printing filaments and powder, thin-walled tubes and more. Evonik also leverages over 60 years of leadership in the design, synthesis, and supply of high-quality polymers to provide medical device companies with a reliable CMO option for proprietary biomaterials from scale-up through commercial quantities.

Our portfolio of biodegradable medical polymers for 3D printing has been developed to provide medical device companies with the flexibility they require to create patient-specific parts for use across a range of application areas including cranioplasty, craniomaxillofacial and skull plates, spinal and large-bone cages, lung implants and bone scaffolds for use in orthopedic, spine, dental and regenerative medicine applications. Based upon specific application requirements, we can provide medical polymers for use with 3D printing technologies including Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), bioplotter and extrusion-based systems. This portfolio includes GMP powders for SLS applications, GMP filaments for FFF applications, and GMP polymer granulates for extrusion-based 3D printing technologies such as freeformers. In addition to being the only supplier with such a unique range of functional medical materials for 3D printing, we have a history of safety and biocompatibility that exceeds more than 30 years of commercial use. As the world’s first commercial GMP and ISO 13845 certified supplier of biodegradable medical materials for 3D printing, we can provide standard and custom grades for use with all key additive manufacturing technologies.

Evonik’s Medical Device Competency Center (MDCC) in Alabama and application labs in Germany and China ensure responsive, reliable project execution and rapid prototyping. Our MDCC facility features state-of-the-art labs and cGMP clean room production to support biomaterial and process development and optimize the design and performance of new and current medical device projects. The MDCC boasts a large team of technical experts who support medical device companies in the design and development of next-generation devices.
