Preventing Skin Ageing: the Potential of Mitochondria-Targeted Antioxidants Based on Hydroxycinnamic and Hydroxybenzoic Acids

Formulation

Information

Detoxification of reactive oxygen species is essential to prevent mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress, contributing for a healthy skin appearance. Novel mitochondriotropic antioxidants derived from hydroxycinnamic and hydroxybenzoic acids were developed to decrease oxidative stress in mitochondria, and delay skin ageing. These novel mitochondria-targeted antioxidants showed no cytotoxicity at relevant concentrations and prevented oxidative stress-induced damage in Normal Human Dermal Fibroblast cells. Furthermore, the antioxidants decreased transcripts relevant for senescence and anti-inflammatory activity in a 3D EpidermFT model. Mitochondriotropic hydroxycinnamic and hydroxybenzoic antioxidants show great potential to be developed and used as innovative active ingredients to delay skin aging.
