My career journey has been meandering.....UK, Zambia, UK, South Africa, UK, East Africa…. I starting in a small boutique market research and marketing company before a brief period with BT outsourcing…. I then spent 5 years with Accenture working in multiple different industries. Looking back at some of my work with Accenture this has parallels to my work in development, in that i spend several years helping power companies to adapt to new market structures and regulations intended to improve competition and ensure the market delivered reduced prices for the population - making markets work!.... though jury out on whether the regulatory changes worked! Like many, 2 years with VSO in Zambia struck me down with a purpose....and gave me the development bug ...and that drove me to DFID so i could be a sponge and learn.....Dfid was a time of learning for me – including a period working in South Africa & Namibia. My work included a stint working on ComMark Trust working in both tourism market and also heavy industry in South Africa,. I was responsible for some challenge funds in DFID, led work on designing AECF, and also was responsible for DFID work around mobile-banking for a period, and I also had a period backstopping all M4P programmes globally for DFID. For past 17 years I have led Gatsby Africa – helping to shape and grow the organisation focused on sector transformation and building on the learning from my career to date. As a self-funded private philanthropy, Gatsby has the freedom and space to think ambitiously and long-term in how to transform sectors and to take risks and continue learning around what is possible and how this can best be achieved. Gatsby presently has a portfolio of 5-6 sector programmes across East Africa, whilst working closely with several governments on how they can strive to deliver inclusive growth.
